Earlier this year, I had posted a video of our First Lady, Michelle Obama in a flash mob with school children. They were dancing to a remake of Beyonce’s song, “Move Your Body”.
Our own Playworks-LA coordinated their own version at one of the 21 schools they have programs in.
What is Playworks? They are a non-profit organization that, simply put, brings physical education and recess programming and staffing to schools that are unable to support these essentials wholly on their own. The benefits of having Playworks at these schools are obvious. They are reducing the rate of obesity in these students by incorporating play, not workouts, but play. Play is exercise. Through play, they are also teaching conflict resolution and leadership skills, which cannot be learned from textbooks. From earlier blog posts, you may also remember that physical activity also helps children focus, thus improving their test scores.
If you believe in this program as much as I do (they’ve been around for 15 years and are present in 22 cities, nationwide), you might be wondering how you might be able to help. Playworks is always looking for volunteers for various events and programs; you can donate new or gently used children’s shoes and clothes; and of course, you can always help in their fundraising efforts.
